Botanical Name:
Mespilus germanica Nottingham
Common Name:
Medlar
Description:
Hardy, small deciduous tree. Full sun to part shade, adaptable to most well-drained soils for warm and cool temperate areas. In autumn the large rich green leaves turn beautiful rusty orange/red tones. Numerous, pure white, single flowers are produced in spring followed by medium sized, pear shaped, yellowish-brown fruit that need to be fully ripe (very soft) before eating. We grow another variety 'Dutch' which has large fruit, roundish in shape. Frost or cold weather is required to assist in the ripening process.
