Botanical Name:
Gleditsia triacanthos var inermis Elegantissima
Common Name:
Honey Locust - Elegantissima
Description:
Slower growing than other Gleditsias the Elegantissima provides the same distinct fern-like foliage and rich colour in a more compact form making it suitable for smaller gardens and courtyards. Green summer foliage turns a lime/yellow in Autumn. It has an upright growth habit and very dense foliage cover so will make an impact wherever it is planted. Thornless (inermis means ‘toothless’) and very hardy so also a good option as a street tree. Gleditsia are hardy, deciduous trees with fine leaves that sit perfectly positioned like bones along a spine. This leaf structure provides dappled shade and makes Gleditsia well suited as a specimen tree as it provides enough light for healthy lawn beneath.
