Botanical Name:
Gleditsia triacanthos var inermis 'Sunburst'
Common Name:
Honey Locust - Sunburst
Description:
Sunburst is a fast-growing and thornless Gleditisia. (inermis means ‘toothless’). It has wide spreading branch structure but with a soft, droopy and graceful overall appearance and small white flowers in Spring. Leaves open golden yellow in Spring, age to lime-green in Summer then turn golden yellow again in Autumn. That golden Spring colour is a key difference between the Sunburst and Shademaster Gleditsia. Gleditsia are hardy, deciduous trees with fine leaves that sit perfectly positioned like bones along a spine. This leaf structure provides dappled shade and makes Gleditsia well suited as a specimen tree as it provides enough light for healthy lawn beneath. Requires full sun, prefers well-drained soil. and does have a vigorous root system.
